Dr. Caroline Aura and Yael Berman highlight the challenges associated with addressing vaccine misinformation in communities.

Sabin Vaccine Institute’s Community Conversations on Vaccines, presented by Immunization Advocates, explores issues related to vaccines and immunization in low- and middle-income countries through discussions with close-to-community professionals, including health workers, journalists and researchers.

Vince Blaser and Francesca Montalto join Dr. Caroline Aura, a research scientist at the University of Nairobi, Kenya and Sabin Behavioral and Research Grant program partner, and Yael Berman, a fact-checking reporter for AFP in Brazil, to highlight the challenges associated with addressing vaccine misinformation in communities. Dr. Caroline talks about her new research that examines government and health system trust, while Yael shares how the infodemic has impacted her fact-checking and debunking work.

Meet Our Guests

Dr. Caroline Aura

Dr. Caroline Aura is a Research Scientist at the University of Nairobi’s Program on Frontline Healthcare Workers in Immunization and a grantee of the Grand Challenges Explorations program. She has been a CO-I on Global Health Innovations, including the loyalty program and the Barcodes program. She is a Co-Founder of GrainBank and VaccineLink LTD, a social enterprise that connects caregivers to vaccination centers. Caroline has been working in the field of Child and Maternal Health for the last ten years and has vast experience and interest in this area.

Dr. Caroline Aura

Yael Berman is a Brazilian journalist working as a fact-checking reporter at AFP. While covering the pandemic, she took part in Infovacina programme, which connects journalists with scientists to improve vaccine media coverage, having won its main prize with her fact-check on why the COVID-19 vaccination passport should not be compared to certificates used in Nazi Germany. She is also the co-founder of Vozes da Floresta (Voices from the Forest), a project supporting young indigenous people to produce and publish stories on their people and territories.
