John Schiller, Ph.D., working alongside NIH colleague Douglas R. Lowy, M.D., made several discoveries on the structural proteins of papillomaviruses. Their findings helped advance the development of vaccines against the human papillomavirus (HPV), the cause of virtually all cases of cervical cancer, and led to the development of three commercial HPV vaccines.
